Explore Freely

There are so many ways to travel these days. I think its always best when you can meet a local person in the city you are visiting, which is why I like CouchSurfing. You have the opportunity to stay at someone's home for free (sometimes they make you dinner too!), or you can just ask to meet up for coffee or a drink and a tour of the city. Its popular in Europe, but its getting bigger in the States too! I know this sort of thing isn't for everyone, but I've met some wonderful people this way and have also saw more and learned more about that city, and I think its important to share this resource.

If you decide CouchSurfing is not for you, see if the city you are visiting offers free tours. On my grand European adventure, Ami and I went on a few free tours and they were great! Aside from being free, you get to see the highlights of the city (awesome if you only have a day or two) and you learn some history and fun facts you may have missed otherwise. You get a fun, typically young guide who works on commission, so they try really hard to give you a great tour! Sandeman's New Europe is one of the big ones and Spotted By Locals has a great list of free tours compiled by city.

And if you really prefer to be a lone wolf on your own schedule, I recommend audio guides for your iPod or music player. You have the freedom to look at sights, places, museums, etc. or to not. If you find a place too beautiful for words, then you will not appreciate your guide talking while you try to take it in. With your own audio guide, you can simply hit "pause" or appreciate it more with the added description. Rick Steves is the master of European travel for ages 18 and up. His podcast on travel was my introduction to Europe and Rick Steves' Walking Tours for your music player are just as good! In 2006, National Geographic produced 50 Walks of a Lifetime covering major cities in both the States and abroad (I highly recommend the Minneapolis episode!). If you do not see your city listed, try a quick Google search or even consider checking out a museum's website prior to your visit for downloadable audio guides.

My personal favorite free thing to do on any trip is to visit a local market or grocery store! You may find things you did not know existed or try something you cannot live without later!
